LAS VEGAS, Nevada (FOX5) — Catalytic converter thieves continue to cause costly trouble for residents of the Las Vegas Valley. The most recent theft occurred at Camping World near the Las Vegas Strip.
The company told FOX5 that 28 converters were stolen last week. One victim told FOX5 he left his RV there for repairs when one of the RVs was stolen. He said his insurance would pay for the repairs, but he had to pay a $1,000 deductible.
The catalytic converter cleans the vehicle’s exhaust. Thieves can steal them in minutes and want the expensive precious metals inside. Some metals may be worth more than gold.
One can buy metal plates that cover catalytic converters to protect them. A business in Las Vegas that replaces stolen RV catalytic converters told FOX5 that it uses a welded, heavy-duty steel cage that is difficult to remove. It is also possible to buy sound sensitive sirens that will make a loud noise like someone sawing through an exhaust pipe to get a converter.
There has been no word yet on any suspects in last week’s theft.
