BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – A petition to add a wet/dry question to Allen County’s primary is circulating in the county. They are available at many local businesses and online.
The last time the question was brought to the polls was in 2017, when voters opted to keep alcohol out. Since then, local business owners have seen residents of Allen’s Co. go elsewhere to buy booze, striking potential deals with them.
“A lot of people only see the alcohol part of it because it’s there and you don’t have to drink it. But you’re going to see the benefits of it in the county,” said Tammie Shockley, a business owner who started the petition Say. “If you go outside the county line, you’re in a wet county. That county benefits from whatever money you spend there. They get your money, and it’s a wet county, so why not leave it in Allen County? Let’s see this place grow.”

“Businesses in Scottsville, they’re collecting autographs for me, I run once a week, pick them up, make sure everything’s ok. We want everyone to be counted, it’s autographed,” Shockley said .
Business owners and residents alike want to see the benefits of wet county status, a shift some believe is long overdue.
Shockley said, “I love Allen County, don’t get me wrong. I just want to see it grow and keep people in the county instead of going out of the county and spending money.”
The Allen County Clerk’s Office said signatures must be submitted by Jan. 31. To be considered legitimate, the signature must be completed in full by a registered voter.
