Jan 17 (Reuters) – Apple Inc (AAPL.O) has indefinitely delayed the launch of its lightweight augmented reality glasses due to technical challenges, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, but still plans to launch its first mixed-reality glasses this year. earphone.
The iPhone maker’s mixed reality headset — which combines augmented and virtual reality — will launch at this year’s spring event, Bloomberg said, adding that the device will cost about $3,000.
Apple’s mixed-reality device will compete with Meta Platforms’ (META.O) Quest Pro virtual and mixed-reality headset, which launched late last year at $1,500, half the reported price of Apple’s device.
Instead of working on AR glasses, the Cupertino, California-based company is now reportedly planning to focus on lowering the price of a follow-on version of its mixed reality device, expected to launch as early as 2024 or early 2025.
Apple’s goal is to use the same chip as the iPhone, not the components found in high-end Mac computers.
Apple did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The Information website first reported that Apple plans to unveil a cheaper mixed reality headset on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, the iPhone maker unexpectedly unveiled MacBooks powered by its new, faster M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, weeks ahead of its usual schedule.
