It’s Senior Bowl week, and we’ve had a chance to take a closer look at some key draft prospects in the 2023 draft. Many of these players have already appeared in mock drafts, and others we’ll learn more about as potential players.
Speaking of mock drafts, we’ve seen several mock drafts with Penn State players, especially in the first round. The most famous name is cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
CBS Sports’ latest mock draft sent Porter Jr. to the Pittsburgh Steelers with the No. 1 pick. 17th pick.
Let’s break it down.
First, Porter Jr. joined the team played by his father, Joey Porter. Isn’t this a cool story!
Next, this we have already said before. Porter Jr. is a “natural fit” for the Steelers in this draft.
Why? Well, the Steelers need an identity in their cornerback room. Right now, a lot of players haven’t proven they can be the team’s true No. 1 cornerback.
It’s also worth noting that the Steelers do have some key corners that require new contracts. They extended Arthur Maulet for two years, so he’ll be in 2024.
On top of that, another of their starting corners, Cameron Sutton, will also get a new deal in 2023.
The Steelers also have Levi Wallace, but he’s also set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2023.
Therefore, the Steelers need to start thinking ahead about the future of their cornerback room.
Bringing in a player with the size and athleticism of Porter Jr. would be the perfect piece in the Steelers’ secondary room, along with safety Minka Fitzpatrick.
The Steelers have some talent on the defensive end and they rank in the top half of the league. Bringing in Porter Jr. will only make them stronger.
Porter Jr. will also bolster their pass defense, which will have to face the likes of Amari Cooper, Jamal Chase and Tihiggins twice a year.
Porter Jr. will come in and have an immediate impact on the Steelers defense.
Porter Jr. has improved every year on the field at Penn State, and he’ll give the Steelers a true No. 1 corner they’ve needed for a long time.
We’ve seen several mock drafts where Porter Jr. doesn’t get past 20, and that’s one of those for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Another big characteristic of Porter Jr. is his reliability.
In 2022, Porter Jr. played 275 snaps and zero touchdowns, according to PFF.
Joey Porter Jr. is a perfect fit for the Steelers.
