The Eagles are 4-5 with the Chiefs. Andy Reid has been a winning coach in his past six games — with the Eagles in 2001, 2005 and 2009, and the Chiefs in 2013, 2017 and 2021.
Mahomes faced the Hawks only once. He went 24-for-30 for 278 yards, five touchdowns and one interception (Eric Wilson) in the Chiefs’ 42-30 win over Linc early last season.
Jalen Hurts had the best game of his career that afternoon, completing 32 of 48 passes for a career-high 387 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.
The last time the Eagles beat the Chiefs was at Linc in Week 3 of the 2009 season, when Kevin Kolb went 24-for-34 for 327 yards and touchdowns to Deshaun Jackson and Brent Selleck.
Veach, a native of Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, is a wide receiver for Delaware State, and his quarterback is current Bears quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy. Between 2010 and 2012, Veach began his career with the Eagles as a coaching intern and entry-level coaching assistant before working as a scout under Roseman.
He is credited with first identifying Mahomes as a potential franchise quarterback and building the Chiefs’ 2019 Super Bowl title.
Nick Siliani spent the 2012 season with the Chiefs on Todd Haley’s coaching staff. When Reid replaced Haley, he interviewed Sirianni, but had been planning to hire longtime Eagles assistant David Culley as his wide receiver coach.
Reed’s coaching staff is full of Eagles connections:
• Special teams coach Dave Toub served as an assistant special teams coach for the Eagles under John Harbaugh from 2001-2003.
• Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy played for Reid in 1999 for the Hawks.
• Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo coached Reid’s second linebacker and linebacker from 1999 to 2006
• From 2016 to 2020, linebackers coach Ken Flajole served in the same role for the Eagles under Doug Pederson.
• From 2003 to 2008, running backs coach Greg Lewis caught 127 passes for 1,699 yards and seven touchdowns with the Eagles.
• Tom Melvin has been Reid’s wing coach for the Hawks and Chiefs for 24 consecutive years.
• Quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy — the coach who lost the Double Doink game — started his coaching career with the Eagles from 2008 to 2012 under Redd.
The only former Eagles on the Chiefs is offensive lineman Tega Wanogho Prince, the Hawks’ 6day2020 first-round pick. He has played in all 19 games for the Chiefs.
The common opponents are the Cards, Colts, 49ers, Titans, Jaguars, and Texans.
The Eagles beat those teams 6-0, the Chiefs beat the Cards, 49ers, Titans, Jaguars and Texans 6-1 and lost 20-17 in Week 3 The Colts, when they were still coached by Frank Reich.
This will be the Chiefs’ fifth Super Bowl appearance. After the 1966 season, they lost Super Bowl I to the Packers at the Los Angeles Coliseum, they defeated the Vikings in Super Bowl IV at Tulane University, and after the 2019 season, they Defeated the 49ers in Super Bowl IV at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, then lost to the Buccaneers in next year’s LV Super Bowl in Tampa.
It was the Eagles’ fourth Super Bowl. After the 1980 season, they lost to the Raiders in Super Bowl XV at the Superdome, in 2004 to the Patriots in Jacksonville, where Reid coached, in Super Bowl XVII, and in 2017. After the season won Minneapolis’ Super Bowl 2, Reid’s first opening-day quarterback, Doug Pederson, coached.
