CHP sends advanced rescue helicopter to search for Bald Mountain hikers

The search continues for two missing Bald Mountain hikers, actors Julian Sands and Bob Gregory, with the help of some advanced rescue techniques.
These two hikers didn’t hike together, but they both Reported as “missing” Friday, January 13. Weather conditions hampered search and rescue efforts, with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reporting they had to delay ground crews’ search due to inclement weather conditions.
CHP Valley Division Air Operations in Auburn, California joined the search effort using their RECCO SAR helicopter detector.
According to CHP Valley Division, RECCO is a rescue technique used by organized rescue teams as an additional tool to more quickly find people buried by avalanches or lost outdoors.
Valley Division Air Operations in Auburn, California, recently received a request to participate in the search for missing hiker Julian Sands in the San Gabriel Mountains near Ontario. Valley Division Air Operations regularly conducts operations in the extreme terrain associated with the Sierra Nevada, looking for missing skiers or hikers. One device used by Valley Division Air Operations in the search was the RECCO SAR helicopter detector, one of only five detectors in the continental United States. RECCO is a rescue technique used by organized rescue teams as an additional tool to allow more Quickly locate people buried by avalanches or lost outdoors. The RECCO SAR helicopter probe is capable of searching an area of 1 square mile in approximately 18 minutes.
