City council moves ahead with sports venue discussions

Ocean City, MD – (February 1, 2023): On Tuesday, January 31, Ocean City Council members voted unanimously to invite the Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA) and its advisors to present an updated stadium market and economic feasibility study at an upcoming meeting. The meeting, expected in March, will be held at the Ocean City Convention Center and is open to Worcester County elected officials.

“Over the past few years, the Worcester County Sports Center has been a top priority for the City Council,” commented City Manager Terry McGean. β€œThe Town felt it was important to have the Maryland Stadium Authority present updates on the sports complex and economic analysis to the Board of Governors, commissioners, other local elected officials, and the public.”

The updated research, published in November 2022, includes an updated market study, economic and fiscal impact analysis, an updated sports participation trend summary, and construction cost estimates. Additionally, the updated study provides key findings, including estimated tax revenues from the continued operation of sports venues.

“There are many questions surrounding the proposed stadium, and we believe that having the MSA and their advisors here will give elected officials an opportunity to ask questions about the project and the results of the report,” McGean concluded. “The Ocean City Mayor and City Council remain interested in building a sports complex in Worcester County, and we hope this meeting will be a fresh start and begin more discussions on how to advance what we believe to be an exciting opportunity for economic development , tourism and our local county people.”
