family economy After Wednesday’s earthquake-themed finale capped off a regrettably abbreviated 13-episode third season, ABC had zero say whether it plans to bring the wildly underrated sitcom back for a fourth season. (When asked, an ABC representative told TVLine that no news would likely be shared on season four.) With our aversion to uncertainty almost as much as our premature cancellation, we called the series’ co-creators Writers/co-showrunners Michael Colton and John Abboud came in for a temperature check on the show’s future.
TV Wire | So… this episode is season or series season finale?
Michael Colton | we hope this is a season ending. We are optimistic. We know the network is very happy with the show. We have a very loyal fan base. We’re just waiting for the right people to get involved. This is a process.but we are planning return. We still have many stories to tell. We are hopeful.

John Abu | We designed this episode as the halfway point in a 22-episode season, season finale, or series finale. We planned for every eventuality.
TV LINE | ABC’s explanation for why you only ordered 13 episodes this season instead of 22?
Colton | It’s basically a shelf space issue…they have a [set] Prime time hours, they have new shows like [Gina Rodriguez’s] not dead yet Come on…but it’s a bummer. We would’ve rather done 22. We have many stories to tell. But every indication we’ve gotten is that the network is behind the show.
TV Line | Let’s Talk season ending. Connor is having a bit of an existential crisis after the earthquake.he is running mayor San Francisco? ! Will this hold up for a potential fourth season?
Colton | We have some interesting ideas about how to play the mayor if we have season 4. I think it’s something we can play with for a few episodes. It was inspired by the idea that when people have a certain level of wealth, they think maybe they should…
About | … running everything! [Laughs]
TV Line | About Denise and Sarah’s IVF journey and why you didn’t get Sarah pregnant this The season since her co-star, Caitlin McGee, was pregnant in real life?
Colton | That would have been an easy job.It will surely save us from having [to make] She took the pillow and put the fruit basket in front of her. Timing wise, there are other stories we want to tell first.Once a character has a child [becomes their main] Story; it’s hard to get away from this. There are a lot of other things we want to play with before we get to this point.Since we have a lesbian couple and this is a very special kind of pregnancy journey – the characters are based on my sister and her wife – we wanted to make sure we had enough room for Tell that journey.if we [accelerated the story to sync up with Caitlin’s pregnancy] We’re starting season 3 early, and she’s pregnant, and [subsequently] Missed opportunity to tell some of the stories we wanted to tell about IVF.exist [a potential] In Season 4, we’re going to have the runway, tell the story the way we want.
TELEVISION WIRE | Casey Wilson has been stellar this season as Harmony. Could she return more full-time in a possible season 4?
Colton | Anything is possible. It is too early to have any of these conversations. But she’s hilarious, and she’s ABC sitcom royalty. She adds a whole new vitality. We absolutely want to bring her back.
