MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Novak Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3 in Sunday’s Australian Open men’s singles final to win the first set.
In the opening fourth game, Djokovic broke Sisipas’s serve and took a 3-1 lead, maintaining his advantage.
In addition to the title, the winner will also receive the No. 1 position in the ATP Rankings.
It is also a chance to win a 10th Australian Open title for fourth seed Djokovic, who was banned from playing at Melbourne Park a year ago for not being vaccinated against COVID-19. It will also be the 35-year-old Serbian’s 22nd Grand Slam singles title, tying his men’s singles record with Rafael Nadal.
Third seed Tsitsipas is trying to become the first Greek player to win a Grand Slam singles title. In his only other Grand Slam final, Tsitsipas won the first two sets against Djokovic but lost the match in five.
