Interested in politics but don’t know where to start? Ready to start your career from the bedside and make a difference? Healing Politics, in partnership with Polis: Politics Center at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy, offers a 3.5-day training course designed for nurses and midwives interested in politics. It will be the first event of its kind for the inaugural Nurses and Midwives Athletic School and will be held May 24-27 in Durham, North Carolina.
Healing Politics is an educational, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization whose mission is to “inspire, motivate, recruit, and train nurses and midwives to run for office while building a culture of civic engagement in the profession”
They believe that nurses and midwives are qualified for public office, but many lack the proper tools and knowledge. Therapeutic Politics builds on fundamental nursing knowledge:
-
Inspiring Nurses to Run for Office Up and Down the Ballot
-
Identify nurses and midwives who will run and build a community to help them
-
Provides nonpartisan training to help nurses outperform
-
Promoting culture in our careers supporting colleagues entering politics
-
Working with researchers to increase our knowledge of elected office nurses and midwives

The program will accept 50 participants by building a diverse group representing geographic, political, racial, cultural and socioeconomic diversity.
The cost of the program is $1095, including $895 in tuition and $200 in fundraising. As noted on the website, fundraising is an integral part of any political campaign and an important part of the campaign school curriculum. During the program, students will learn how to carry out activities and become more comfortable seeking support. To reduce the total tuition for Campaign School, students are required to raise $200 within 30 days of completing the course.
As classes run from early morning until evening, all meals are included in the course fee. Hotel and transportation are not included and individuals should consider this cost when applying. Duke University is located near Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), with hundreds of daily flights departing from across the country. Official hotel information has not yet been released.
