Nick Sirianni may have set his alarm for Monday morning.
He can’t wait.
He’ll then be on the WIP morning show and hit back at longtime host Angelo Cataldi and whoever was quick to criticize defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon this season.
“Man, what did they score? 7. Yeah, it’s important,” Sirianni said after the Hawks beat the Giants 38-7 in the divisional round. “Jonathan Gannon puts these guys in a good position. We have great players, obviously. Sometimes I have to hear things about Jonathan Gannon, I don’t know if it’s you guys. Probably more Others. I can’t say names – Angelo – right?
“But the guy is an unbelievable coordinator. The fact that he doesn’t have the respect of our radio station blows my mind. It blows my mind.”
The Eagles’ defense was great Saturday night.
After pitching the first half, the Giants finally scored a touchdown in the third quarter, but trailed by 6:01 in the process. With an easy lead at that point, Gannon might be happy to trade time for seven points in a blowout.
While Gannon has received a lot of criticism during his two years as defensive coordinator — not just from Cataldi — it’s hard to dispute the results or what was accomplished Saturday night.
The Eagles held the Giants to 227 total yards. They made quarterback Daniel Jones’ night a living hell. They never even made the Giants think they had a chance to win that game.
During the regular season, the Eagles finished with the second-best defense in the league, giving up 301.5 yards per game.
Sirianni said he didn’t really listen to the criticisms of Gannon until the Eagles’ public relations staff addressed them to him in preparation for his interview.
“So, every time I hear an answer about Jonathan Gannon, I laugh to myself,” Siriani said. “In fact, coaches from other teams asked me, Is Jonathan Gannon bad here? I’m like, somehow, yes. As incredible as this guy is.
“Because of what he’s done, he’s going to be the head coach of the NFL. This guy’s a stud. He’s a stud. I can’t wait to talk to Angelo on Monday.”
