Kathy’s department includes Leslie Sprouse, Mark Casto, Kathy Daley-Nutt, Kelly Pugh, Dr. Ferdinand Martinez and Connie McQueen.
RN Kathy Daley-Nutt was recently honored with the DAISY Award® for Nursing Excellence at Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital. Presented semi-annually to hospital nurses, the DAISY Award is part of the DAISY Foundation program to recognize the extraordinary efforts nurses make every day.
A nomination submitted by a family member of one of Casey’s patients read:
“My dad was diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) in 2021. Shortly after his diagnosis, he was told he could no longer work due to all the diseases he had. From checking us in regularly to helping We were in the right direction for health insurance and the right direction for me to take leave of work and Kathy was there for us every step of the way so I could be there for my dad. As I cried over the stress and the unknown of what life was going to bring us She was there to listen in. At first she was a complete stranger and now my family considers her family!
My dad always said he was lucky to have a nurse like Kathy, she made him feel so comfortable and she is one of the reasons he is alive today! If my dad didn’t go through the treatment plan, he would only live about a year, which would be devastating to me. I’m proud to say it’s officially been a year and a month since he got the news, he’s doing great, almost back to his old self, and I’m so lucky to still have him! Thank you Kathy for all you do, you have been a blessing to my family and my dad. “
The nonprofit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died in 1999 at the age of 33 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses during their illness inspired this unique way to thank nurses for the profound impact they have had on the lives of their patients and their families.
Kathy is a Registered Nurse in Oncology and has worked at Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital for 19 years. She also worked as a CNA for 14 years before becoming a nurse.
“Being a nurse is so fulfilling, and when you can help someone feel better or put a smile on their face, it’s good for my heart,” Casey said. “Winning this award makes me feel like I’m doing a great job of being the best nurse I can be for my patients. I never thought I’d be awarded for doing something I love. My mom always wanted to be a nurse, She told me I achieved her dream. She would be proud.”
“Kathy deserved this award. Her dedication to the nursing profession and her compassionate care did not go unnoticed,” said Carole Norton, Chief Nursing Officer at Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Nurses can be nominated by anyone affected by their care—patients, family members, other nurses, physicians, other clinicians, and staff—anyone who has experienced or observed the extraordinary, compassionate care nurses provide.
