“Bergman’s Island” (Standard)

Mia Hansen-Løve’s latest series ‘One Fine Morning’ has earned critical acclaim, but I prefer this 2021 film puzzle box, a riveting deconstruction Creatively inspired film. In this film, Chris (the always excellent Vicky Krips) and Tony Sanders (Tim Ross) travel to the infamous Faro Island, where Ingmar Bergman worked, lived and filmed his some of the movies. Tony admires Bergman, but Chris is less enamored of the movie icon, partly because of his treatment of women. As she explores the island, she writes a film about a woman (Mia Wasikowska, in one of the best performances of her career) who travels to the island for a wedding and meets a man ( Anders Danielsen Lie’s story. The standard edition of this character-driven drama includes all-new interviews with the director and stars, as well as a short film by Gabe Klinger (“Porto”) during production.

“Bones and Everything”

Luca Guadagnino, director of “Call Me By Your Name” and “Blows the Wind,” makes one of his most controversial films in this tale of young cannibals in love . Using the practice of cannibalism as an allegorical starting point for outsiders, “Bones and All” is the story of Maren Yearly (the excellent Taylor Russell), who flees society when her father can no longer handle the fact that she is a cannibal. On the way, she meets two men: the eccentric and disturbing Sally (Mark Rylance, All Out) and the supportive Lee (Timothée Chalamet). What unfolds is a bold coming-of-age story that will be re-watched and re-evaluated far beyond many of 2022’s most critically acclaimed films.
