Ingham County, Mich. (WILX) – The Ingham County Health Department announced Thursday that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners has appointed Nike Shoyinka, MD, MPH, as Medical Health Officer, effective February 18. Linda Weil (Ingham County), the current health officer, will retire on February 17 after leading the department for more than nine years.

In this role, Dr Shoyinka will be responsible for the strategic vision and direction of the health sector. Under the Michigan Public Health Code, a medical health officer is a physician and the county’s top public health official.
“I am honored and excited to take on this new role with Ingham County,” said Dr. Nike Shoyinka. “As the health sector begins to enter the post-pandemic phase, my priority is to ensure we are rebuilding our people and programs to best serve our communities.”
Dr. Shoyinka holds a medical degree from the University of Ibadan School of Medicine and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Columbia University Harlem Hospital in New York City, an Infectious Disease Fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital/Wayne State University in Detroit, and a preventive Medical Degree University of Michigan Residency. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Preventive Medicine.
Prior to his appointment as Ingham County Medical Health Officer, Dr. Shoyinka served as the Medical Director of the Ingham County and Ionian County Health Departments. She oversees public health clinical operations and provides medical oversight for all public health programs, including infectious disease programs and correctional health.
The Ingham County Health Department expressed their sincere gratitude to Linda Vail for her service and leadership to the department and county as health officer over the years.
