Kevin worked with his Mexico-based colleague Mary Beth Sheridan on a series of eye-opening productions, including “Out of Control,” a five-part series about deteriorating security in Mexico, which won the 2020 The Overseas Press Club’s Bob Constance Award for Best Interpretation of International Affairs. Over the past year, their courageous reporting on Mexico’s role in the drug trade has been the centerpiece of “Cartel Rx,” a seven-part interagency series about the U.S. and Mexico’s fight against Finland. A failure in the scourge of Tenny. On a personal note, he’s also produced stellar work, such as his immersive written and audio reports on the painful toll of family separation in the Trump era and the grotesque world of Mexican bounty hunters racing to hunt down American fugitives.
Kevin has demonstrated extraordinary versatility, tenacity and initiative in his coverage of Afghanistan, Africa and Mexico. As a marathoner, he spent two grueling days with one of Mexico’s greatest athletes, Germán Silva, as the two-time New York City Marathon champion ran all over his country, showing its beauty and diversity. (Kevin says it’s one of his favorite stories.) It was Kevin who came up with this new assignment covering sports so he could use his investigative and narrative skills to make a case for athletes, federations and other leading international players. The power brokers bring greater accountability to the movement.
Kevin earned a BA in International Relations and Comparative Arts from Brown University and has a long-delayed exam ahead of his MA in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He speaks Spanish and is learning French.
In his new role, Kevin will be part of a team led by International Investigations Senior Editor Peter Finn. Peter and Kevin will coordinate with Joe Torn and the other editors at The Sport as we expand the scope and ambition of our investigative work. Kevin will remain in Mexico until the end of 2023 before moving to a new international location.
Please congratulate Kevin on his new role starting April 17th.
