Mexico gives Pemex ‘full support’ for debt payments
MEXICO CITY – The Mexican government will provide more support to state oil company Pemex and develop a plan to ensure outstanding bond payments due this year are met, the president said, underscoring one of the left’s top political priorities .
President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador said at a news conference that with the assistance of the government, Pemex’s debt payments are being made on time and that the Treasury Department and Pemex’s leadership are working on Payment schedule for this year.
López Obrador said the government would continue to reduce Pemex’s tax burden and take other steps, noting that the ministry would soon explain how the debt would be repaid.
Venezuela opposition leader wants to protect assets
MADRID – The new head of Venezuela’s opposition legislature believes the United States will support the body by continuing to protect foreign assets such as refiner Citgo Petroleum from creditors, she said.
Dinorah Figuera, a 61-year-old doctor from the Primero Justicia party, was chosen earlier this month to lead the opposition National Assembly as it prepares to pick a presidential candidate and push for renegotiations with the ruling Socialist Party.
Figuera, who is in exile in Spain, told Reuters in an interview that the new three female leaders of parliament would be able to stand up to President Nicolás Maduro, who the U.S. and others see as a dictator, and protect Citgo and nearly $2 in assets The Bank of England received $1 billion in gold from creditors.
Peru’s president says elections could be brought forward to this year
Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has said she is considering bringing forward elections to later this year as the new leader struggles to contain protests calling for her resignation that have left several Ten people died.
Congress is due to discuss a proposal later on Friday to bring forward the national election to April 2024 from 2026, but some lawmakers have proposed moving the election to late 2023.
Boluarte became president in December after her predecessor Pedro Castillo attempted to illegally dissolve Congress, before he was ousted and detained.
New U.S. immigration rules slow down Darien Gorge traffic
BRASILIA – The number of people trekking through the jungles of the Darien Canyon between Colombia and Panama to the United States has dropped sharply since the U.S. government tightened immigration rules, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said.
Earlier this month, Washington expanded COVID-19 pandemic-era restrictions to include immigrants from Cuba, Haiti and Nicaragua, not just Venezuelans, who could be deported if they crossed the border into the United States Back to Mexico.
