Video and audio recorded during last year’s attack on Paul Pelosi will be released Friday after a California state court ruled that the district attorney’s office must make the material public.
According to the San Francisco Superior Court, audio from the police interview of alleged assailant David DePape, along with investigative material including 911 calls, police body camera footage and home surveillance video, will be released at noon ET.
CNN previously reported that police body camera footage of the incident is expected to show former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Pelosi, opening the door of the couple’s San Francisco home with his assailants. Hit him with a hammer to break his skull.
The court’s decision to compel the release of the materials follows a motion from a coalition of news organizations, including CNN, which argued that transparency was needed about the situation involving the residence of the then-House speaker.
DePape’s attorneys objected to the public release of the audio and video, arguing that it would “irreparably impair” his right to a fair trial. DePape pleaded not guilty to a string of state and federal offenses related to the assault, including battery and attempted murder.
According to court documents, Pelosi was violently attacked with a hammer in the couple’s home in October by a male assailant who was hunting for the then Speaker of the House — a development that ultimately prompted Nancy Pelosi to West decided to step down from the Democratic leadership of the House of Representatives.
Court documents show that DePape allegedly woke up Paul Pelosi shortly after 2 a.m., armed with a sledgehammer and several white ties, and demanded: “Where’s Nancy? Where’s Nancy? He then threatened to tie up Paul Pelosi and prevent him from escaping in an elevator, according to the documents. DePape allegedly later told him, “I can take you out.”
Paul Pelosi, who called 911 after convincing his attacker to let him go to the bathroom (his phone was charging), spoke cryptically to police.
Nancy Pelosi’s spokesman said in a statement that Paul Pelosi underwent surgery “to repair a fractured skull and severe injuries to her right arm and hand” following the attack .
On Thursday, the Democratic congresswoman told reporters her husband’s recovery was “once a day.”
“He’s made some progress, but I think it’s going to take at least three more months to get back to normal, but prayers are very helpful,” Pelosi said.
She told reporters Thursday that she had not seen the video of the incident and did not know if she would.
“It would be very hard to see an attack on my husband’s life. But I don’t know.”
