seattle – Two Washington student-athletes and the UW football team have been nominated for the 2023 Seattle Sports Star Awards.
Bailey Klinger nominated as Sports Star of the Year, Women’s Sports. Klinger was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year in 2022 and leads the league in home runs, RBI and batting average. She was also a top-three finalist for the US Softball Collegiate Player of the Year.
Michael Penix Jr. is a candidate Sports Star of the Year, Men’s Sports… Penix finished eighth in this year’s Heisman Trophy voting and was named the most outstanding offensive player after leading the Huskies to an Alamo Bowl win. He set a Washington record for passing yards in a single season with 4,641 yards.
UW’s Outstanding Season Nominated sports story of the year, the award is given to an individual, group of individuals or organization that actively draws attention to and inspires Washington State. The Huskies (11-2, 7-2 Pac-12) beat No. 20 Texas State to win the Valero Alamo Bowl, their fourth victory over a ranked opponent in 2022.
