The VA Maryland Healthcare System (VAMHCS) Post-Baccalaureate Registered Nurse Residency (PB-RNR) program is one of the VA Office of Academic Connections (OAA) federally funded programs that provide newly graduated nurses with the training hours they need to specialize in Used to strengthen clinical competencies while also identifying their interests and identifying their nursing career paths within the organisation.

About the plan
VAMCHS Resident Nurses will have 100% protected training time and will not count toward the staffing matrix. The training model provides professional rotation through a variety of clinical settings and specialties, following standards for health professional education in other health disciplines. This is a rigorous 12-month program that follows OAA’s comprehensive, veteran-focused, and competency-based curriculum, which includes interdependent experiential and didactic learning activities.
The program is highly competitive and seeks RNs who are mission-ready, compassionate, adaptable and possess strong interpersonal skills. Each resident nurse will receive:
- Annual stipend rate of $65,299
- Health insurance
- Calculation of annual and sick leave based on the resident’s federal leave service calculation date
- No weekend/off work/holiday spread
- access VA-Intern Recruitment Event (VA-TRE) connects trainees with VA facilities across the country that have job openings, matches them with those locations, places trainees in the most suitable locations, and retains trainees in the VA system.
Requirements to participate in the VAMHCS PB-RNR program:
- You must be a US citizen
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) From a CCNE or NLNAC accredited program
- Must not have any paid RN or paid Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) work experience
- Current unlimited RN license (acquired prior to start date)
- must Graduated less than one year from program start date with a 3.0 GPA or higher
- Proficient in spoken and written English
- Pass VA pre-employment medical and drug tests
