Priyanka Chopra has opened up about the tragic birth of her daughter.
“I don’t know if she’s going to make it,” Chopra said in a new Vogue UK interview.
Chopra and husband Nick Jonas announced on social media on Jan. 21, 2022, that they had a daughter via surrogacy. The couple married in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, in 2018.
“We are pleased to confirm that we have welcomed a child through surrogacy. We respectfully ask for privacy during this special time as we focus on our family. Thank you very much,” the statement read at the time.
Chopra told the publication that their daughter Malti was delivered three months before her due date. Chopra said Malti was taken straight to the neonatal intensive care unit because her labor was considered “extremely early.”
“She was so small, smaller than my hand,” she said, expressing her gratitude and awe to the nurses who quickly intubated and cared for her daughter.
“They do God’s work,” Chopra said.
Marti spent three months in the NICU before being discharged.
At home, the couple had the help and support of their family, Chopra said.
“They talked to me a lot about it,” Chopra said of Jonas’ parents, Kevin and Dennis Jonas. “But because I’m a NICU mom, the stakes are high.”
Speaking about their decision to work with a surrogate, Chopra shared that she had “medical complications” and it was a “necessary step.”
With Chopra returning to the spotlight after a year away from acting to focus on her family, the actress said how important it was to her to continue to focus on Indian and South Asian actors with Malti in mind.
“I want her to look back and be proud of my choice,” Chopra said.
