Razzie has apologized and removed child actor Ryan Keira Armstrong from its annual nomination list.
Armstrong was nominated for worst actress this week for her performance in “Firestarter,” as the Golden Razzies are officially called, a parody of the Hollywood awards ceremony that claims to celebrate movies The best worst movie ever.
Given that Armstrong was only 12, there was a backlash.
“Sometimes you do things without thinking, and then you’re asked to do it. And then you get it. That’s why Golden Raspberry was created in the first place,” said John B. Wilson, Golden Raspberry co-founder ) said in a statement on Wednesday.
“The recent valid criticism of choosing 11-year-old (sic) Armstrong as a nominee for one of our awards has brought to our attention just how insensitive we are in this situation,” the statement continued. “As a result, we have removed Armstrong’s name from the final vote our members will take next month. We also believe that Ms. Armstrong should publicly apologize and wish to say that we regret any harm she has suffered as a result of our choice “
Razzies will only nominate people 18 or older to move forward, according to the group.
“We never intended to bury anyone’s career. That’s why we created the Redeemer Award,” the statement said. “We all make mistakes, ourselves included. Since our motto is ‘Acknowledge your mistakes,’ we realize we have to live by it too.”
CNN has reached out to representatives of Armstrong for comment.
