Payton’s contract expires in 2024, which means a deal with the Saints is critical to his hiring. A trade to stop him could look like a “mid or late first-round pick,” the former New Orleans coach speculated. Houston has the Nos. 2 and 12 picks, Carolina has the No. 9 pick, and Denver has the 49ers’ first-round pick projected to fall in the late 20s.
The Texans parted ways with Lovie Smith after finishing 3-13-1 after just one season, including a comeback win in Week 18 that cost the team the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft.
