Sony is expected to report a drop in earnings in its corporate earnings update later in the day.
Yoshida proposed executive changes last year to strengthen Sony’s management of its diverse businesses. It was unanimously approved by the board on Thursday.
For decades, Sony has been synonymous with Japan’s technological prowess, and it brought mobile entertainment to the world more than four decades ago with its mobile music player. In recent years, it has been criticized for having trouble coordinating its sprawling business, which ranges from video games and music to digital cameras and robot dogs.
Totoki said he will work hard to meet the challenge.
“I want to create a positive cycle, starting with customers choosing Sony, and then motivating our employees, enabling us to attract more new talent, increasing our corporate value, and ultimately enabling us to give back to society,” he said.
