With only about two weeks left in the high school basketball regular season, let’s get an update on the Clatskanie Tigers.
It’s been a tough run for the Clatskanie boys basketball team. After a strong start in non-league play, the Tigers won three of their first four games with wins over Scio, Rainier and Portland Adventist Academy. After that, a tough game began, with the team losing 11 of their last 12 games.
In the league, the Tigers struggled with a 1-7 record, competing in the 2A-1 Northwest League. Their one win was absolute domination over Gaston, ending Jan. 10 79-36 on the road. At press time, the Clatskanie boys were in a five-match skid, with losses to Knappa, Portland’s Mannahouse Academy, Portland Christian, Vernonia and Nestle.
A heartbreaking loss to Knappa, the Tigers lost 64-66 at home on Jan. 16. The men’s program currently ranks 31st out of 37 teams in the Class 2A competition. Of the eight teams in the league, they are seventh and Gaston is eighth. Their top team in the league is Knappa and they have an 8-0 record in the league.
With six games remaining, the Tigers will look to get back on track in the final game and end the season on a high note. Results for Thursday, January 26 vs. Faith Bible can be found on OSAA.com. In Game 1 against Faith Bible on Jan. 6, the Tigers were beaten 37-52.
women’s basketball
The Clatskanie girls’ basketball team has been more successful, with an 8-8 record at press time. After a strong start in non-league play, the team started 4-0 and finished their pre-league campaign 5-3.
In the 2A-1 Northwest League, the Tigers are 3-5 and rank 20th among the 36 teams in the 2A division. The team lost to Knappa and Vernonia in close games, each by 10 points or less. The team also had some big wins, beating Portland Christian 54-37 and Gaston 73-45.
In their league, the Tigers are sixth among eight teams, while Nestucca leads the league with an 8-0 record. At press time, the Clatskanie girls had 6 games left to try to make it to the state playoffs.
On Thursday, January 26, Clatskanie is scheduled to face Faith Bible/Life Christian. Results can be found at OSAA.org. Trailing 27-55 in their previous game at home, the Tigers will be looking for revenge.
