Midland, Texas (KOSA) – Superstition says Friday the 13th is the most unlucky day of the year.
But for businesses like Uprock Midland, the day offers a lucky opportunity to land new customers.
Sonny Aguilar has owned “Uprock” for 23 years. It’s an eclectic mix of skateboards, smoking equipment and incense.
“I put together everything I was interested in and loved growing up,” Aguilar said.
But mostly, “Uprock” is mostly used in tattoos.
“I’ve seen it all, I’ve done it all,” Aguilar said. “Tattoos aren’t crazy anymore for me.”
During the time he owned “Uprock,” the art of tattooing changed.
“In the past, you always practiced on yourself, on grapefruit, or on pigskin,” he said.
But some things never change, like the fact that Friday the 13th is one of the busiest days of the year.
“It’s definitely one of those things,” Aguilar said. “must.”
Aguilar said Friday that the 13th tattoo deal used to involve getting the number “13” tattooed somewhere on the body; however, he said in recent years, stores have shifted to deals that only offer smaller tattoos.
As patron Courtney Hurd can attest, the deal works.
“We have a lot on our shoulders,” Hurd explained.
Aguilar’s connection to Friday the 13th is more than just business. He was born on Friday, October 13th.
“I’ve always considered Friday the 13th a lucky day,” he said. “It’s always been a lucky day for me.”
So, maybe everyone else is wrong. Or maybe luck is just another name for what you earn.
“23 years, man,” Aguilar said. “23 years.”
