The frenzy of high school sports in February begins with a busy playoff night on the district mats.
The WPIAL Team Wrestling Playoffs are in full swing on Wednesday with the first round and quarterfinals.
Last year, when Burrell lost to Quaker Valley in the Class 2A final, it ended the second longest team title fight in WPIAL history, ending a streak of 15 titles.
If the Bucs are going to start a new title race, they’ll have to start as the No. 3 seed in the Double-A Tournament, behind No. 1 seed Burgettstown and No. 2 Quaker Valley.
The four sites for 2A are Burgettstown, Highlands, Burrell and Quaker Valley, with the first round at 6pm, followed by the quarterfinals at 7:30pm for the two winners from each site
The first round of 2A is:
In Burgesstown: Southmoreland and Montour vs. Mt. Pleasant in Burgettstown
In the highlands: Highland Indiana and Hopewell vs. Frazier
In Burrell: Burrell and Laurel’s Knoch vs. Central Valley
In Quaker Valley: Jefferson-Morgan of the Quaker Valley and Liberty and McGaffie
Triple-A Playoff Fight
Waynesburg still has a long way to go to match Burrell’s 15-year winning streak in Class DoubleA, but the defending Triple-A champions are looking for a fourth straight team wrestling title this week.
The Raiders are the top seed in the triple-A playoff field.
The program is no stranger to championship wrestling. Waynesburg won six straight Triple-A titles between 1959 and 1964.
If the Raiders win another gold medal on Saturday, they will match Canon-McMillan (2010-2013) for the third-longest Triple-A title in WPIAL wrestling history. Cannonsburg won five straight championships between 1936 and 1940 before splitting the title with Waynesburg in 1941.
Waynesburg and Canon-McMillan are two of four sites for Wednesday’s Triple-A first round and quarterfinals. The other two locations are Connellsville and Butler.
The first round of 3A is:
In Waynesburg: Fox Chapel and Plum vs. North Allegheny at Waynesburg Central
In Cornellsville: Franklin Regional vs. West Allegheny in Connellsville and Pine-Richland
In Butler: Butler and Trinity’s Peters Township vs. Hempfield
At Canon-McMillan: Penn-Trafford at Canon-McMillan and Norwin vs. Latrobe
king looks to add
A day after he set a WPIAL men’s basketball career scoring record, Aquinas College senior Vinnie Cugini wasted little time trying to top his record-breaking scoring total.
The Crusaders visit Hillel Academy in Wednesday’s Section 3-A game.
Despite the final week and a half of the regular season, this will be the first meeting between the two division rivals this year.
On Tuesday, the two will face off again at Aquinas College six days later.
