Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrates the birthday of civil rights leader the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He was assassinated four years later.
This year’s holiday is Monday, January 16th. It’s a federal holiday, which means government agencies, banks and many corporate offices will be closed on this day.
Here’s what’s open and closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Non-essential government offices — such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, public libraries and city offices — will be closed. State and federal courts will also be closed. Be sure to check local guides ahead of time.
The U.S. Postal Service will be closed on Monday, so there will be no normal mail deliveries. Other delivery services — including UPS and FedEx — will continue to operate — though FedEx and FedEx Ground Economy will modify service.
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq were closed on Monday. Today is a bank holiday, so most banks will not be open.
ATMs and Internet banking services will be available.
Major retailers like Target, Walmart, Costco, Sam’s Club and major grocery stores including Kroger will remain open, as will most national chain restaurants. However, be sure to check with local shops and restaurants, as their hours may vary.
