There are plenty of people who come to Nashville to chase their dreams of writing the next great country song. Spend an evening listening to a writer’s tour at the Bluebird Café and you’ll see the incredible level of talent that Music City has to offer.
But somehow, as a Nashville native, I missed the creative boat. As a software developer, I’m not bad at logical thinking. But when it comes to imagination, things like songwriting have always been out of my reach.
until last weekend.
I started.
With lyrics like “drinking sweet tea and dreaming of small town love” and “I’ll keep driving the truck down this dusty old road, chasing my dreams and my cowboy code”, I started thinking maybe I Chose the wrong career.
With my talented writing partner, an artificial intelligence (AI) bot called “ChatGPT,” writing a country song was suddenly possible even for a less-than-creative techie like me.
If you haven’t checked it out, ChatGPT has gone viral. As easy to use as Google, users just type in anything from “write a country song” to “write a poem for my beautiful wife” and within seconds ChatGPT will do it with very human-friendly results out response.
It represents the next step in bringing artificial intelligence to the masses, as ChatGPT teaches itself to become an expert on every topic imaginable, while communicating in a way that is nearly indistinguishable from real people.
cool or scary?
Hard to say. As with any technology, whether AI is a net benefit or loss to society depends on how we humans choose to use it.
On the positive side, advances in artificial intelligence could help doctors diagnose disease or help scientists combat climate change.
But on the negative side, AI has the potential to replace tasks inherent to humans.
Whether it’s creating art (like a great country song) or writing a college essay, with computational power no human mind can match, AI bots like ChatGPT can be used in all sorts of nefarious ways.
Even the efficiencies that AI will surely create will have adverse effects. Imagine a world where anyone, from lawyers to accountants to therapists, could be replaced by AI bots.
Objectively speaking, AI bots are good but not good enough. When I presented my country song lyrics (via ChatGPT) to a songwriter friend, he immediately told me to start over. Still, anyone who has spent a few minutes playing ChatGPT can see its potential.
So how can we thoughtfully prepare for the impact of AI? As with many disruptive technologies, there are no easy answers.
I decided to ask ChatGPT this question to see what it thinks. It’s actually very responsive, it answers questions 1000 times faster than I can do myself.
